Olivia Savell's Remix of This Is by Ella Mai

This Is Remix Description

I decided to remix Ella Mai's song This Is because I listen to her music all the time and I love some of the beats in her songs. I interpret this remix as a love song to my future career in the Audio Industry. I recorded the original This Is by Ella Mai into Logic Pro X using the virtual audio loopback driver software: BlackHoleI removed all the instruments using the free features in the AI app Moises and I left Ella Mai's original lyrics.

I recorded myself harmonizing with certain parts of Ella Mai's lyrics using my Audio Technica AT 2035 Cardioid Condenser Microphone inside my closet hooked up to a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, with a sheet over all my stuff as seen in the picture. This is also the setting and microphone I used to record myself shaking Flow Rings and tapping on a wooden table with the handle of a wooden baseball bat as my two live instruments in this remix. The Virtual Instruments used in this remix were Drums: Neo Soul Drum Kit with variations and fills on loud and complex; Analog Bliss Kick with C1 notes from Neo Soul Kit; SoCal Drum Kit with only Hi-hats enabled. Subby Bass with C1 notes from Neo Soul Kit that I played with, Downtown Clavinet in Gm with chords from Lost Time Synth Melody 04 software instrument from the Loop Browser in Logic Pro X, Studio Trombone 1 with notes from a software instrument in Logic's Loop Browser named Rock Steady Sax 01 that I rearranged a little. There is also a Deluxe Classic Grand Piano in Cm, Knightly Synth Horns, and the Better Together Guitar Arp.

The Neo Soul Drum Kit is from a drummer track in Logic played by Curtis on Neo Soul with Square Roots beat set to loud and complex. The SoCal Drum Kit is a Pop Rock drummer track in Logic that has only Hi-hats played by Kyle with a Half-pipe beat set to loud and simple. Analog Bliss Kick is the kick line pulled from the Neo Soul Drum Kit and I found its sound by playing with the individual kick track of VI’s drum kit in the drop down menu but the sound is easily found by searching in Logic’s library. The Subby Bass, Deluxe Classic Grand Piano, Downtown Clavinet, and Studio Trombone 1 are all sounds pulled from Logic’s library. The Deluxe Classic Grand Piano is found under Keyboards in Studio Instruments. The Downtown Clavinet’s sound is from the Vintage Clav-Experimental and the Trombone is from Single Instruments on Studio Horns. Knightly Synth Horns and Better Together Guitar Arp are both audio loops from the Loop Browser in Logic. Mellow Clavinet Chords 02 and Rock Steady Sax 01 are software instruments, also from Logic’s loop browser.

My mixing involved Pro Tools plug-ins such as a Reel Tape Flanger, Channel Strips: (Expander, Compressor and Key Side Chaining for ducking compression), AIR Frequency Shifter, AIR Talkbox, AIR Enhancer, AIR Dynamic Delay, Dyn3 De-Esser,  EQ3 7-Band and Reverb on D-Verb. I used auto gain techniques to raise each track to -6db. The Mastering Pro Tools Session included plugins such as Dyn3 Compressor/Limiter, EQ3 7-Band and Maxim on Bus 1, ff d2 6-Band, Pultec EQP-1A, Pro Multiband Dynamics and Pro Limiter on Bus 2 and on Bus 3 I tried the free trial of the Ozone 11 Mastering software from isotope, using their Master Rebalance, Dynamic EQ and Maximizer. The Stereo Master has the POW-r Dither and Master Meter on it.
